HOME LIGHTING: THE 3-LAYER RULE AND WHICH COLOUR TEMPERATURE

Every room needs three layers on separate switches: ambient, task and accent. Use 3000K warm white through the home, 4000K only where you need clarity, and never mix the two in one room.
THE THREE LAYERS
Ambient is the general wash — downlights or a concealed cove. Task is light where something happens: over the dining table, on the kitchen counter, beside the bed for reading. Accent points at one thing: art, a material, a plant. A single ceiling fixture cannot do all three, which is why no amount of styling saves a room lit by one lamp.
TEMPERATURE, DIMMERS, DIRECTION
3000K is the number to remember for living areas and bedrooms; 4000K suits kitchens and bathrooms. Keep every layer on its own switch and add dimmers — the cheapest luxury in any project. And notice that the evening photos you save are almost all side light, not ceiling light: one pendant plus two lamps plus a concealed strip makes a complete room.
